Hi I am a welsh surfer who has recently moved to Oslo, and I am desperate to go surfing but I don?t have a car. Is there anyone who wants to shear some petrol money and go on some surf trips.

I am a qualified surf teacher and life guard and will happily swap surf lessons for a ride to the beach p.s. I may be abele to borrow a good beginners board.

At the moment I am working in Oslo as a freelance photographer for some of the Oslo newspapers but I would prefer to live somewhere with good surf. I was thinking of trying to move to Stavanger but Bergen might be better for work dos anyone know if there is good waves near Bergen.

Thanks Greg Buick gregbuick@hotmail.com48158324

p.s. I am going back to Wales next week and wont be back until the 5 Jan but after that a surf trip would be gait.

Sorry!

no waves in Bergen, but Stavanger is the surf mecca of Norway. The Jær beaches outside of Stavanger has numerous of surf spots from beginners to experts.

Have lived there for two years. The islands outside are good for windsurfing though (especially at Herdla)

There are a lot of waves, but they're probably not surfable.

What is Stavanger like as a place to live. I have been told it is full of boring oil rich people with no capacity for abstract thought, and it rains all the time like Bergen. But I have also been told that it is like paradise on earth, with good swell and offshore winds everyday, that there is a happy bustling little surf scene without too many crowds and that you can ski nearby.

I am sure neither of these responses can be entirely true so, what I want to know is, how good is the surf really? dues it suffer from lots of flat spells and strong onshore winds? Is there a happy little surf scene? or is it full of American oil workers who behave as if they are surfing at Huntington? Dues it rain a lot more than it dues in Oslo? Would I be able to live by the beach and work in the city? Can you ski nearby and is there other existing outdoor things to when it is flat?

* It rains a lot more than Oslo, but not as much as in Bergen

* There are a lot business people (especially oil people), but the population is really diversed. I think there are people from 90 nations living in Stavanger

* It is a very cosy city, with small streets, a lot of coffee shops and MANY pubs. (good night life). I love the city myself

* There is a happy little surf scene, but it is growing fast (after what I've heard - haven't lived there for 1,5 years). It is not crowded in the week days yet though.

* There are probably ten times more surfers in the summer compared to the winter

* There is a lof of flat swells, and a lof of onshore winds. The wind is the biggest problem really. But there is always some place you could surf. The days during the year when the wind and the swell is right the surf is great.

* You could live by the beach and work in the city, but then you'll need a car

* The nearest good ski place is Røldal, 3-3,5 hours drive from Stavanger. You could also try Sirdal (www.sirdalsferie.no) several small ski places, but not so good (1,5 hours from Stavanger).

* There is a lot of things to when it is flat: skating, climbing, cycling (don't know what you like to do smile )

Thanks

Thanks for all the feedback I have never been in a discussion room before I think its pretty cool that people can be bothered to answer all these questions.

I?m going to take a little trip over to stavanger when I come home from Christmas in Wales and check it out.

Thanks again.

You could also try Svandalen skisenter in SAuda, 2 hours with boat fron Stavanger. Not as good as Røldal, but better than Sirdal.
